Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind Reader. (C) 2005-2007 KNFBRTI This document contains instructions for downloading and installing software upgrades for the Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind Reader (trademark) (the Reader). Before downloading and installing a software upgrade, please read this entire document and follow the instructions. This document assumes that the person performing the installation is familiar with the different parts of the Reader. If not, refer to the User Guide that comes with your Reader for complete details. NEW USERS: If this is the first time you are upgrading the Reader software, be sure to read the "Downloading the Software Upgrade" and "Installation Instructions" sections of this document. You'll need to follow those instructions to get the upgrade version working with your Reader. DISTRIBUTION: Distribution or reproduction of this software application is a violation of the Licensing Agreement. The Licensing Agreement must be accepted in order for this application to operate. This application can only be used by people who have purchased and registered the Reader. DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE: The Reader software upgrade can be downloaded from the "Upgrades Web Page." There are two different hardware configurations used for the Reader. These configurations are also described on the download page. Be sure to select the particular hardware configuration of the Reader you are using. "Hardware configuration B" has the function buttons stacked vertically with F1 and F3 on the left of the Up/Down/Left/Right button group, and F2 and F4 on the right. "Hardware configuration A" has the function buttons in a horizontal line, with F1 and F2 to the left of the Up/Down/Left/Right button group, and F3 and F4 to the right. If you cannot figure out which hardware configuration you have, please contact Tech Support at 877-547-1500, or send an e-mail to: support@knfbreader.com Once you have determined which hardware configuration you need, select on the web page the option -a radio button- that matches your hardware configuration. Once the radio button is selected, you can download the software upgrade by clicking on the Download Button, and saving the file to your PC. You should keep in mind that since the file is a compressed (zip file), you will need to decompress it in order to extract the installation folder. Make sure you save the zip file to a location on your PC that you can easily access. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: The zip file that you have downloaded contains all the files and folders that are needed to install the Reader software version 3.8.1 for the first time, or to upgrade it from a previous version. Follow the instructions below to achieve proper installation/upgrade: 1. Decompress the zip file and extract the entire installation folder and its contents to your PC. NOTE: You may use the Windows Self Extractor program to decompress the file, or use any other available program such as WinZip (www.winzip.com). 2. Copy the entire folder "2577" to your PC. NOTE: DO NOT change the name of the folder. 3. Copy the folder, 2577, to a spare blank SD Card with 64MB of available memory or higher. There should be a 45 degree angle corner at the top right-hand corner of the card. Note: DO NOT use the 1GB storage card or the installation SD card that came with your Reader. You will need them in case you have to re-install the original software application. 4. Ensure that the Installation SD card is not locked. To unlock it, find the top of the card, the edge with the bumpy connector and the cut-off corner. Along the left side, there is a slider which must be moved toward the top of the card. 5. Insert the blank SD card into the SD card reader on your PC or into an external card Reader. You should check to be sure that the SD card is blank. It is particularly important that the card does not have a previous version of the folder, 2577. Note: DO NOT delete the "2577" folder from your original installation SD card that came with your Reader. Once the card is blank, copy the entire new folder "2577" from your PC to the SD card. NOTE: Do not save Folder "2577" inside any other directory or subdirectory. 6. Remove the SD card from the PC card reader and lock the card by moving the slider back to its original position. 7. Locate the SD card slot on your Reader. All Readers that do not use a CF card for file storage have only an SD card slot used for both file storage and software installation. In this case you need to remove the 1GB Storage Card used for file storage before inserting the installation SD card. If your Reader has a slot for a CompactFlash (CF) card, the slot used for the SD card is slightly above it and not as wide as the slot used for the CF card. 8. Before inserting the software installation SD card, turn on your Reader by pressing F1 followed by F2. 9. After the Reader is switched on and ready, insert the new SD card into the SD card slot. The installation should begin automatically within a few seconds. NOTE: If the installation fails to start when the SD card is inserted into the PDA slot, remove the SD card from the slot, wait a few seconds, and insert it back again. If you have any questions, consult the User Guide provided with your Reader. 10. Listen for the progress messages, followed by periods of silence during the installation process. Once the application has started, you will be prompted to press F2 to accept the Licensing Agreement. 11. Once the installation/upgrade has finished, remove the SD card from the Reader and store it in a safe place. If your Reader stores files on an SD card, rather than a CF card, insert your 1GB storage card back into the PDA slot. 12. Press F1 twice and listen for the status report to confirm that the latest version of the Reader software is running.
