Introducing the KNFB Reader

First released in september 2014, KNFB Reader continues to receive high marks from reviewers and users alike.

This fabulous, life-changing technology was first demonstrated by James Gashel, Vice President of Business Development at KNFB Reader, LLC and Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind, at the NFB's National Convention before a presentation of Ray Kurzweil, Director of Engineering at Google Inc.

 

From March 1st 2017 on, KNFB Reader is available for iOS, Android and Windows.

The KNFB Reader is a joint development effort of Sensotec nv and KNFB Reader, LLC.

Take Picture From Stand Profile

Place your device on a recommended stand and have pictures of text taken automatically; works especially well for use with batch mode to quickly capture and read books.

Link To Dropbox

Turn on link to dropbox so all files saved in your Reader will also be saved in a knfb folder automatically created in your Dropbox directory; files remain in Dropbox even if deleted from your device; also allows backup and restore files from Dropbox and easy file sharing.

KNFB Reader for Windows 10 is the world's best solution for enabling blind and low-vision individuals to quickly and easily access the content of printed materials anywhere, anytime.

It takes a photo of any text and instantly reads it aloud.

KNFB Reader’s patented image processing technology makes it easy to photograph even the most complex documents - such as bills, brochures, books, or magazines -using the best optical character recognition (OCR) technology available.

The text is read aloud using any one of Microsoft’s built in voices or can be displayed in Braille with a compatible screen reader and refreshable Brailledisplay.

KNFB Reader's proprietary audio and vibration guidance help the user take the perfect image of a document so that processing is fast and accurate.

Supported Devices

Due to the large quantity of Android devices available, it is difficult for us to list all compatible devices. Here are recommendations on hardware and operating system version which will ensure a greater likelihood of a successful experience:

  • Optimal experience: Android device with a hexa or octa core CPU, an 8 megapixel camera, and Android 5 or 6.
  • Less optimal (KNFB Reader will run, but you will notice reduced speed and accuracy): An Android device with a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, a 5 megapixel camera, and Android version 4.3.

Supported Devices

KNFB Reader for Windows is a Universal Windows App. It requires Windows 10.

In order to do anything beyond recognizing image files with the app, an image capturing device is required. This could be a document camera, a flat-bed scanner or even the built-in camera on the back of a phone or tablet.

Not all cameras are created equal, you will have better results if the camera has auto-focus, takes pictures of 5 Mega-pixels or more and includes a flash.

Other factors, such as processor speed and available Ram will affect performance.
